Guardianships For Adults and Minors

At Zawtocki Law, we assist clients in establishing guardianships and advise guardians on their rights and responsibilities. Whether you are caring for an adult who can no longer make decisions independently or a child whose parents are unavailable, our attorneys can guide you through the process with care and clarity.

A guardianship is a legal process in which the court appoints a responsible adult (the guardian) to make decisions and care for another person (the ward)—either an incapacitated adult or a minor who needs a caretaker.

Guardianships for Adults

Adults may need guardians when they are unable to make responsible decisions about their personal care, finances, or daily needs—often due to mental illness, disability, or cognitive decline.

Zawtocki Law represents clients seeking guardianships and conservatorships for adults and can provide guidance on related estate planning tools, such as wills, trusts, and powers of attorney.

Legal services are available through full representation or consultation and document preparation.

Guardianships for Minors

A minor may need a guardian when a parent is unable or unavailable to care for the child. In many cases, guardianships are established by consent, such as when a parent temporarily cannot provide care due to military service or work assignments.

Guardianships can also protect a child’s best interests when parents are not capable of doing so. Other legal options may include third-party custody (in loco parentis), adoption, or dependency/kinship care.

Our attorneys also assist with:

  • Adoptions (step-parent, relative, and non-relative)
  • Emancipation of minors

These cases are handled with compassion and attention to each family’s circumstances, from start to conclusion.
